Winners of the ‘Save the Drop’ Contest are Recognized At Board’s Budget, Audit and Facilities Committee Meeting
Winners of the Save the Drop Water Conservation Contest received their prizes today at ceremony held during Board of Education’s Budget, Audit and Facilities Committee meeting.
The three top schools each received $50,000 check to fund a conservation project at their campus. In addition, 12 winners representing first through twelfth grades, received a $10,000 check for a project at their school.
“The purpose of this contest was to promote awareness and conserve water. Students were encouraged to use their creativity to show how this resource can be saved at school and at home,” the District’s chief facilities executive Mark Hovatter said.
The campaign’s mascot, The blue-costumed “Water Drop,” added to the festivities in a board room filled with students, teachers and principals.
The top champions, who earned $50,000, were chosen from three categories.
Elementary: Tweedy Elementary School, 5th grade entry
Middle School: Walter Reed Middle School, 6th grade entry
High School: Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets, 10th grade entry
“Congratulations to all of the winning schools. I really hope this exercise and partnership with Mayor Eric Garcetti and LADWP, will help change a whole culture, to ensure that our kids and their kids conserve water in everything they do,” Hovatter said.
“We are striving to make conservation a way of life for all our students,” Chrysiliou said. He added, “Thank you for looking out for our friend, the Drop.”
